The University of Louisiana at Monroe, or ULM for short, is a coeducational public university located in Monroe, which is the parish seat of Ouachita Parish, situated in the US state of Louisiana, with a population of more than 54 000 inhabitants, fact which makes it the 8th largest city in the state. Monroe and the neighboring city of West Monroe are often referred to as the Twin Cities of northeast Louisiana.
ULM first opened its doors in September, 1931, under the name of Ouachita Parish Junior College. In 1939 the institution was renamed Northeast Junior College of Louisiana State University, and in 1950, the state legislature approved its expansion to a full college, ULM starting to offer academic degrees. After being renamed again, 2 times, since 1950, the current name of the university was finally adopted in August 1999.
Today, ULM is the only university in the state to offer a master’s degree in gerontology, including postgraduate and doctoral pharmacy degrees. The university is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), and all undergraduate programs that are eligible for accreditation by professional agencies are accredited.
The athletic teams from ULM are known as the Warhawks, who participate in the NCAA Division I (Division I FBS for football), ULM, after previously playing as a member of the Southland Conference, on July 1, 2006, joined the Sun Belt Conference for all sports. The water ski team from ULM is considered to be the most successful in the history of collegiate water skiing, winning a total of 22 NCWSA national championships, since its inception in 1979. The Warhawks have also won conference titles in men’s basketball and baseball, and the football team posted its first six-win season since moving to Division I-A in 2007.
